Zanzibar's southeast and east coast beaches get consistent wind from June to October and December to March, making them some of the better spots in East Africa for kitesurfing. Most sessions take place around Paje and Kiwengwa, where the water is shallow, warm, and wide enough to ride without obstacles. Both beginners and experienced riders can get on the water.
If you've never tried it, an instructor walks you through the basics on the beach before you go in, kite control, body positioning, launching, and landing. If you already know what you're doing, you can rent gear and head out on your own. Sessions are flexible and depend on wind conditions on the day.
