Prison Island — also known as Changuu Island — is a short boat ride from Stone Town. The island was once used as a prison and quarantine station, and today it's home to a sanctuary of giant Aldabra tortoises, some of which are over a hundred years old.
You'll walk around the island with a guide who explains its history, from its prison days to its role during the colonial period. The tortoise sanctuary is the main stop, where you can observe and get close to the tortoises. After that, there's free time to walk the grounds or sit by the shoreline before the boat takes you back to Stone Town.
