Since October 2024, every visitor to Zanzibar is required to buy travel insurance from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC). This is separate from any personal travel insurance you already have. Even if you're fully covered by your own policy, you still need to buy this one. It's a government requirement for entry.
You can buy it online before your trip or on arrival at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport. Buying online saves you time — you skip the queue at the insurance desk when you land. Either way, you won't be allowed through immigration without it.
Two options — online before your trip (recommended) or on arrival at the airport.
Go to visitzanzibar.go.tz, fill in your details, pay $44 USD, and save the confirmation or QR code. Show it at the airport on arrival. Takes a few minutes and saves you queuing when you land.
You can purchase at the insurance desk at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport before going through immigration. Expect a queue, especially during peak travel months (July–October, December–January).
Can I use my own travel insurance instead?
No. Your personal insurance is for your own protection. The ZIC insurance is a separate government requirement. You need both.
Do I need it if I'm coming from mainland Tanzania?
Yes. Whether you fly in internationally or arrive from Dar es Salaam or Arusha by flight or ferry, the insurance is required for all non-residents entering Zanzibar.
What happens if I don't have it?
You won't be allowed through immigration. There's no exception.
Do children need it too?
Yes. Every non-resident visitor needs their own insurance, regardless of age.
If you're booking a tour or package with us, we can help you with the insurance process. Just mention it when you get in touch.
